Maple Ridge Cake Smash Photographer: What to Expect + FAQs

April 7, 2026

Your baby’s first birthday is such a special milestone, and a cake smash session is a fun and meaningful way to celebrate it.

If you’ve never done one before, it’s completely normal to have questions. My goal is to make the entire experience feel easy, organized, and stress-free so you can actually enjoy the moment instead of worrying about the details.

Here’s everything you need to know before your cake smash session.

What to Expect During Your Cake Smash Session

When you arrive at my Maple Ridge studio, everything will be ready for you. Your custom set will be designed based on the theme we planned together, so all you have to do is show up and enjoy the experience.

Depending on your package, we will begin with a few family and individual photos. This gives us a chance to capture some beautiful, connection-filled images before moving into the messy part.

Then we move into the cake smash.

Every baby reacts a little differently. Some are instantly curious, while others take their time warming up. I always follow your baby’s lead and keep things playful and relaxed.

If your little one isn’t sure about the cake, I gently guide them with simple tricks like giving them something to explore or incorporating a familiar snack. There’s no pressure for them to “perform.” Some of the best images come from their natural reactions.

Some sessions also include a warm bubble bath in a little tub. It helps with cleanup and creates some of the sweetest, most loved images from the entire session.

You don’t need to worry about the mess or the logistics. I take care of everything so you can focus on your baby and enjoy the experience.

“We had an amazing cake smash photoshoot experience with Crystal! She was extremely helpful and organized, making the whole process stress-free. Her professionalism really stood out, and it's clear she knows how to work with kids, which made a huge difference.”

Common Cake Smash Questions

When should I book a cake smash session?

I recommend booking your cake smash session at least 6 weeks before your baby’s birthday or party. This allows time for planning your set, photographing your session, and delivering your final images.

Many families in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and Langley book when their baby is around 10 months old so everything is ready in time.

Do I need to bring the cake?

No, a simple cake is included and designed to match your theme.

If your baby has allergies or dietary needs, just let me know ahead of time and we’ll make a plan. You are also welcome to bring your own cake if you prefer. Cakes with buttercream or whipped frosting work best since they are easier for little hands to smash.

What should my baby wear?

You’ll bring your baby’s outfit, and I’m always happy to help with suggestions.

Simple, comfortable outfits tend to photograph best. Rompers, bloomers, overalls, and soft dresses are all great options. I’ll also guide you based on your chosen theme so everything ties together beautifully.

You’re welcome to bring a second outfit for family photos. I also have bags ready for messy clothes so cleanup is easy when you head home.

“Crystal was also super helpful with outfit suggestions and really listened to what we wanted. She created an even better setup than we imagined for our son's cake smash.”

What if my baby doesn’t like the cake?

This is more common than you might think, and it’s completely okay.

Every baby has a different personality. Some dive right in, and others are more cautious. I keep things light and playful, using simple tricks to help them feel comfortable.

Even if your baby doesn’t fully smash the cake, we still capture beautiful, genuine moments that reflect who they are at this stage.

Can I choose a theme?

Yes, and this is one of my favourite parts of the process.

Whether you’re drawn to something soft and neutral or something more fun and playful, I design each set to feel personal and unique. I love bringing your ideas to life and often adding little details that make it even better than you imagined.

How messy does it get?

It can get messy, and that’s part of the fun.

I take care of the setup and cleanup, and the bath at the end makes everything simple. You don’t need to stress about a thing.
